Vernon Abbeyfield are pleased to report that the local Gyro Club made another $1,000 donation, similar to last year's to their House in Vernon, B.C.

A big 'thank you' for their generosity!

Not only is their donation a great help, it also created some positive publicity for both groups as this photo appeared in the Wednesday, February 2, 2011 edition of Vernon's Morning Star.

Their booth looks great, as you can see - congratulations Abbeyfield Burnaby on a such eye-catching signs!

We hear all to often from new comers that Abbeyfield is a well kept secret - shows like this make sure the local community know what's on offer.

Reported by Ted Spurgeon, President, Abbeyfield Saskatoon

Earlier this summer when I dropped into Abbeyfield Saskatoon to carry out my usual Tuesday maintenance activities I was advised that one of our residents wanted to speak with me. Anticipating something like a leaky faucet or a stuck window, I stopped by Jean Macpherson's room. Instead of a maintenance issue, Jean asked me to prepare a letter of reference in support of the nomination papers she was preparing in order to put Florence Graham forward for the first annual awards to be presented by the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism. She had learned of the awards through a publication that she had received. The web-site is as follows:   http://www.skseniorsmechanism.ca/   It offers all of the information about this organization and about the awards process.   On reading through the information in the nomination package I agreed wholeheartedly with the idea and prepared the reference letter Jean requested. Jean also secured a letter from another of the many organizations Florence Graham supports. She also drafted a letter on behalf of all of the Saskatoon Abbeyfield residents which they signed and added to the nomination package.   We were all delighted when it was announced that Florence had won the award in the highly appropriate Advocacy category. The awards were presented at a gala banquet in Regina in early October, which Florence and her husband Walter Graham attended along with Jean Macpherson. Needless to say Florence used the opportunity to make sure the news about Abbeyfield got out to all of those who listened to her acceptance speech.   Unfortunately the Sask Seniors Mechanism does not appear to have updated their website yet. We understand that a public announcement will be appearing soon in the major Saskatchewan papers. Photos taken with our Lieutenant Governor are expected as well.   Florence seems to be a little shy about publicizing her receipt of this award.   We of Abbeyfield Saskatoon are not shy at all about this and believe there could not be a more deserving recipient.   The fact that the nomination sprang from our Saskatoon Abbeyfield residents, who did all the work in preparing and submitting the nomination package, makes the award all that more impressive.  I have attached to this email a copy of my letter of reference. Unfortunately I do not have the ones prepared by the residents themselves or by the other supporting organization.   We hope that Abbeyfield Canada can find a way to bring this extremely important achievement up at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on October 22nd. Once the various photos and press material arrives I am sure we can find a way to get it to National Office for possible inclusion in a future edition of the newsletter and/or on the national web-site.
