Sir Anthony Hopkins, noted British Actor and later known as Hannibal the Cannibal, broadcast an appeal for Abbeyfield on the BBC in England. His text was as follows:
“About a year ago, I was asked to open a residential care home for elderly people. It was in Caerleon, Gwent, where I used to live. Frankly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Would there be half dozing people sitting around the edge of the room? Would it be quiet? Still; depressing?
My mother, now in her 80s, came with me. Together we walked into a splendid house overlooking the river Usk. As soon as we entered, the image I formed disappeared.
It’s difficult to explain what I felt, but there was a feeling of ‘family’ - not at all institutional and I vividly remember a sprightly 99 year old woman who presented my mother with a bouquet of flowers.
This was home in every sense of the word. It was lively - even chaotic at times. The residents’ rooms were furnished how they wanted. There was a choice of activities to join - or indeed not to join.
What I experienced in those two hours with Abbeyfield is typical of the independence, companionship, and happiness enjoyed by over 8,000 people in over 800 Abbeyfield Houses all over the United Kingdom.
The happy hours my mother and I spent with residents and volunteers convinced me that Abbeyfield is getting it right - responding to the changing needs of older people. But the inquiries Abbeyfield receives every week is a constant reminder that more houses are desperately needed. Please make a donation.”
