Abbeyfield offers a warm, family-style House and a balance between privacy and companionship, security and independence, combined with the special caring element provided by dedicated volunteers and the consistency of a single House manager.
The Abbeyfield concept is very simple. It comprises an affordable house in which up to fourteen people of retirement age live in their own bed-sitting rooms furnished with their own things, yet share the two main meals of the day. A live-in housekeeper attends to the daily running of the house, the shopping and the preparation and serving of meals. Privacy and independence are preserved yet the gentle supportive domestic atmosphere provides companionship and freedom from worries and chores.
A standard Abbeyfield:
·Provides housing for seniors
·Caters for up to fourteen people (numbers may vary based on community needs assessment)
·Does not provide nursing care
·Provides three meals a day; usually residents prepare their own breakfast
·Has a live-in House Coordinator who attends to the running of the House
·Provides an un-furnished bed-sitting room
·Has an en-suite bathroom for each resident
·Provides a communal area for taking meals and socializing
·Is run by a board of volunteers
·Is a non-profit enterprise
·Maintains affordable rental costs
·Displays the Abbeyfield Name
·Pays a membership fee, calculated on rental revenue, to Abbeyfield Canada
In certain cases, this model can be adjusted with the permission of the National Board.Adjustments are considered on a case by case basis with Societies making a written proposal for a deviation along with their reasons for needing that adjustment.
