Abbeyfield Loses Major Figure

We have lost a major figure, W. Charles Cooper, in the Abbeyfield movement world-wide.

He began in 1992 to plan and create two Abbeyfield Houses in Burnaby, BC. He worked with other seniors’ organisations and then, not content with his role in British Columbia, he joined the National Board of Abbeyfield Canada, and also became Alternate Director to Abbeyfield International.

His modesty hid many of his activities, and he never hesitated to travel at his own expense to meetings.

Tributes have poured in from Abbeyfielders all over the world. The funeral on March 27 was attended by family, friends and Allan Snowie, Chair of Abbeyfield International and past President of Abbeyfield Canada, and Norman Song, Past President of Abbeyfield St Margaret of Scotland, Burnaby, gave tributes.

He was a staunch and sincere practising Christian but not an annoying proselytiser. Norman Song’s eulogy on the Abbeyfield International website ends as follows:

Charles left a rich, visible and enduring legacy. His kindness, consideration, his generosity and dedication will be remembered by all those who had the good fortune to know him. His name spread beyond the boundaries of his church, his country, and far beyond the borders of Canada. [ -obituary]
